三月防疫屋頂上的賊

二月是一個遙遠的回憶，在巴賽隆納取消之後工作上失去了重心，要求要更新工作內容之後旅行一一取消。連跟倫敦的例行工作電話都變得有趣起來。然後假都沒請就決定跟一群男生朋友到波多黎哥，想說這冬天因為寫作而帶來的肩膀痛可以在溫暖的加勒比海中舒緩，結果居然還變本加厲。 回來之後出差繼續取消，先是丹佛再來拉斯維加斯。六月的英國是未知數，四月期待已久的墨西哥自助看來也必須改期。 Covid-19 在三月的第二個星期急轉直下，紐約慣有的熱鬧氣氛也被澆熄。待在家裡要到什麼時候沒有人知道，連教會都開始線上聚會。每天磨咖啡剪接等劇本反饋認真學新的食譜讀巨流河，在家工作到下午跟她去散一個長步。想學西班牙文，現在還來得及吧？ 八月中越來越近了，一切像漂浮在水上一樣沒有重量無法控制，岸在哪裡還不知道，到了之後一切也不會風平浪靜。清晨的時候會夢到自己在某個旅館，一直想到去年新加玻的溽熱和十月在阿姆斯特丹夜裡的行走，夢裡不知道自己在哪裡，醒來想了一下會有依稀的記憶。偶爾會想起在荷蘭根特一個叫 Ray 的酒吧喝加 rosemary 的琴酒寫一篇沒有結尾的小說，記憶中的街道總是陰暗但溫暖的，天永遠不會亮起來。 然後今天六點十四分醒了，天還沒亮。煮了咖啡，在荷蘭亂寫從未讀過的文字不知道在哪裡，時間只是一個概念吧？有一本 Margret Duras 的小說講一個小鎮為了捉殺人犯把全鎮的人關在家裡，賊就在屋頂上跳耀，有一個女人看到賊但沒有通報，就索性跟他發生一段似有若無的關係。是義大利還是西班牙？想不起來了。 下午來整理書架好了。

Way Down In The Hole

七點半起床，磨豆子泡咖啡，整理開會的資料然後洗澡。十一點跟在倫敦的同事開會，討論如何幫他們發展企業影片的品牌，談脫歐冠狀病毒和香港，八月會發生什麼事啊？九月的新加坡和十一月的南非還是未知數。 十二點出門，坐車到三十四街轉 Ｒ線到五十七街。二月底紐約不冷但是一副要下雨的樣子。早了幾分鐘到醫院，她到的時候候診室坐滿了人。我們等了四十分鐘，醫生看診時突然問我是不是在醫療體系工作，我說差遠了。 兩點二十我沿著百老匯往南到四十九街，紐約時報的新聞在講俄國和 Saunders 的關係，今年是大選年嘛。然後又早到了茶店。湯瑪斯兩點四十的時候一臉倉促走進來給我一個擁抱。兩個老朋友就吃鹹酥雞和珍奶聊到快四點 — 不過我懷疑在賓州長大的他可能從來沒喝過珍奶。我們打給在德國杜賽的 Afra，跟她更新大家生活，我問什麼時候才能去他們的婚禮啊？德國妹說別問了，她長期交往的男朋友對婚姻一點興趣都沒有，她說感情能不能夠撐到夏天還不知道。 然後我們穿過時代廣場的巨幅 Bloomberg 競選海報，下午四點多外面飄著小雨，從四十九到三十四。湯瑪斯問我為什麼華人喜歡說你吃飽了沒有，然後聊到 Kobe 的驟然去世。到 Macy’s 時他停下來，告訴我兩三年前他跟一個日本女人交往的事情，他後來發現她是有夫之婦，發現她後來得了癌症很她很快地離開了。 五點，我們給彼此一個擁抱，下星期見。 五點半到家，趙在忙，我很累但睡不著，隨便叫外賣跟她一起吃。 七點出門到西村一家擁擠的 Radio 吧跟大學同學J森喝一杯啤酒。聊以前紐約大學電影系的時光和我們現在在寫的劇本，他每天六點起床寫兩小時然後去上班，希望有一天可以有自己的電視劇，我讀了他的劇本，他了解架構熟悉格式但是沒有故事，這在劇本初學者中很常見 — 其實我也沒好到哪裡去。聊到 The Wire，他說自己在第五季中當過臨演，這是我們最喜歡的電視劇，背景就在他長大的巴爾的摩，我說我有機會拍片一定會用裡面的演員。不知道為何聊到信仰，一個好的科幻故事是不是要相信我們存在是有意義的才值得探討？他說他是 agnostic 不可知論者，但是他劇本想說的是泛靈信仰和大地之母的存在意識，這似乎有點衝突。 九點多我們走出酒吧，沿著空蕩蕩的西村走了幾個街區之後道別，明天買了機票要去波多黎哥但是想取消。

The Road...or whatever is ahead

Crawling out of my skin everyday gets better at home. A nice pour over and a bumpy writing session. Waiting for the finished screenplay to go around and most likely end up nowhere if we’re looking at the statistics (or my writing). Still, the urge to be self righterious continues to itch. I want to go somewhere.  In my dreams I’m always somewhere foreign. A hotel. A street. A city. Places I was. Faces that I remember but fades the moment I turn to them.  The birth, the hasting after the physician, the beggar’s tramp, the drunkard’s stagger, the laughing party of mechanics… The escaped youth.  Years of traveling taught me nothing but to keep on going and ask questions. Anything at all: How are you? How’s your family? What do you think of this country and tell me about the war — there usually was one.  Where are you from? I’m not sure.
